Marseille have sacked Míchel as manager, 24 hours before their Coupe de France semi-final against Sochaux, the club have announced.

“Given the behaviour of Míchel, notably during those last three weeks, Olympique de Marseille have suspended Míchel with immediate effect and summoned him to a pre-redundancy interview,” the club said in a statement.

Marseille have not won in 11 Ligue 1 fixtures and are only six points clear of relegation with four games to play. Their latest defeat came at second-placed Monaco on Sunday.

The assistant coach Franck Passi will take charge until the end of the season.

Last week the club’s owner, Margarita Louis-Dreyfus, announced she was looking for a buyer. “I understand the frustration of fans at seeing OM unable to compete at the same level and I have taken the decision to sell the club to the best possible investor for the long term,” Louis-Dreyfus said in a statement.
