Marseille in talks to sign Manchester United defender Eric Bailly

Marseille are in discussions to sign Manchester United defender Eric Bailly.

Bailly, 28, is fifth-choice centre-back at United following the signing of Lisandro Martinez and he only made seven appearances for the club last season. It is understood a possible loan with an option to buy is being discussed for Bailly.

United have been widely criticised for rewarding Bailly with a new contract in April 2021 when his previous deal was due to expire in June 2022 and they intended on signing Raphael Varane.

Bailly only signed a renewal until 2024 with the option of an additional year and the club’s generosity in negotiating contracts with fringe players has been blamed on former executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

United have been open to selling Bailly and fellow centre-backs Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe but the latter two are recovering from injury and have missed the entirety of pre-season.

Jones, 30, has not trained with teammates during the summer and Tuanzebe, 24, has not participated in first-team sesssions since he withdrew from United’s pre-season tour squad after the opening game against Liverpool in Bangkok.

United bought Bailly from Villarreal for £30million in 2016 and he enjoyed an impressive debut season.

However, the Ivory Coast international has been injury-prone and managed 113 games across six seasons - an average of under 20 appearances per campaign.
