Marsden Moor fire: Huge blaze raging for more than a day was 'started by BBQ'

Firefighters are battling a huge blaze on Marsden Moor that is thought to have been started by a barbecue.

Crews from West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester were called to the fire near to Saddleworth last night.

On Monday lunchtime the fire was continuing to burn amid another day of soaring temperatures.

The fire is understood to have been caused by a barbecue, according to the Marsden Moor National Trust Facebook page.

A statement said: "Fire update: fire is still burning. National Trust staff and West Yorkshire Fire Service meeting at first light to review situation.

"Helicopter on standby. This fire was caused by people using a BBQ at Easter Gate.

"The deployment of the helicopter itself costs the trust, a conservation charity, £2,000 per hour.

"We're devastated to see the destruction caused. Please help us protect the moors and wildlife by calling the fire brigade immediately if you spot any signs of fire."

Residents in Carrbrook and Saddleworth areas have reported a strong smell of smoke in the air.

It is the second moorland fire in the area this week, with crews called to another fire on the moorland between Marsden and Slaithwaite a week ago.

Crews from West Yorkshire are also battling another moorland fire which broke out yesterday afternoon on Ilkley Moor.

Three men have been arrested in connection with the fire which at its height covered an area of more than 25,000 square metres.
