Marsden cliff death: Next of kin now been identified as inquiry continues

The next of kin of a man who died after falling from a cliff have been informed by police.

The 76-year-old died after a car went over the railings at Marsden Grotto, South Shields , and onto the beach on Wednesday evening.

Emergency services were called to the beach at around 6pm but the man inside the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Northumbria Police said they were making attempts to locate the man's next of kin.

On Thursday they confirmed that the family had been informed and were being supported by specialist officers.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Inquiries are ongoing to determine how the vehicle came to be on the beach but it is not believed there was any third party involvement.

"Anyone who might have witnessed this incident is asked to contact police by calling 101 quoting log 818 030419."
