Mars is set to get closer to Earth this week than at any other time over the next 15 years.

The red planet will be 38.6 million miles (62.1 million kilometres) away from our planet on Tuesday, Science Alert reports.

Mars is currently north of the celestial equator, meaning that, from today, it is well placed to be seen from both hemispheres.

Scientists recommend stargazing for those who want to check a sky chart and get a good glimpse of the fourth planet from the sun this week.

The closest possible encounter happens when Earth is furthest away from the Sun and Mars is closest to the Sun.

Earth's previous closest approach with Mars was recorded in 2003 when there was a 34.6 million mile (55.7 million kilometre) distance between Earth and the red planet.

Another close encounter was recorded in 2018 with just 57.6 million kilometres (35.8 million miles) between the two planets.

Earth and Mars are not expected to reach such a close distance with Mars until 2035.
