Mars is turning Snickers back to Marathon again - but you'll have to be quick

Chocolate manufacturer Mars is renaming its popular snack treat Snickers to Marathon - the name we all bought it under across the UK until 1990.

The retro rebrand came into effect on Monday and will last for just 12 weeks, before Marathons are no more and Snickers will rise again.

The special pre-named chocolate bars are being sold in packets of four for £1 - 25p each - at branches of Morrisons. It follows a recent move which saw Mars turn back the clock on Starbursts making them, for a time, Opal Fruits again.

Mars introduced Snickers in the USA in 1930 - named after the favorite horse of the Mars family - and made with nougat, peanuts, and caramel with a chocolate coating.

The bar was marketed under the name Marathon in the UK and Ireland until 1990, when Mars decided to align the UK product with the global Snickers name (Mars had marketed and discontinued an unrelated bar named Marathon in the United States during the 1970s.

It isn't just the name that has changed. Over the years, the bar weight has decreased: Before 2009, in the UK a single Snickers bar had a weight of 62.5g. This weight was subsequently reduced to 58g in 2009,  and to 48g in 2013.
