Married woman, 23, kills self after being harassed by youth in UP; 3 booked

MEERUT: A 23-year-old married woman allegedly died by suicide over harassment by a youth and his two friends in UP's Muzaffarnagar.

Victim Pooja Pal was found hanging from the ceiling of her room in Janakpuri area under Civil Lines police station area of Muzaffarnagar on Wednesday, said police.

A senior police officer said that a case has been registered against the main accused Sonu Kumar, a resident of Shamli, who was allegedly harassing and stalking her, and his two friends - Vijay Kumar, a resident of Kajikheda, and Rahul Kumar, a resident of Sisauli in Muzaffarnagar - under IPC section 306 (abetment of suicide) following a complaint by the victim’s kin.

Pooja, native of Kajikheda village, got married to Deepak Kumar six months ago. According to the complaint filed by her family, Sonu sarted harassing the woman for marriage from over a year ago and it continued even after she got married. They mentioned in the complaint that a few days ago, the accused had threatened to kill the woman's husband if she did not accept his proposal, so she took the extreme step.

Police reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem. After the examination, the body was handed over to the victim’s family members on Wednesday evening, said circle officer (city) Kuldeep Kumar.

Meanwhile, superintendent of police (city) Arpit Vijaivargiya said, “All the three accused are on the run. A team has been constituted to arrest them soon.”
