A 62-year-old punched and kicked his girlfriend when their relationship came to an end.
John Walker was with Karen Green for some six months, at which time he had split from his wife, Bristol Crown Court was told.
But when the couple shared a meal and talk of the relationship ending was broached, Ms Green reacted badly and declared Walker had "used her for sex".
He then attacked her, the court heard yesterday (March 27).
Waler, of Brue Close in Weston-super-Mare, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair QC sentenced him to eight months in jail, suspended for 18 months.

He told Walker: "This is an unpleasant offence.
"The level of injury is distressing.
"You accept that you are the cause of this.
"You are unlikely to re-offend."
Ellen McAnaw, prosecuting, said after Ms Green claimed he used her for sex, Walker pulled her to the floor and kicked and punched her.
'A naughty thing'
She suffered bruises to her arms and face and a broken thumb which she sustained as she tried to break her fall.
Walker told police he had done a "naughty thing" when they were called in but declined to answer questions in interview.
Nicholas Fridd, defending, said his client accepted he "lost it" and at the time had split from his wife.
He said Walker recognized it was a very nasty way to end a relationship with Ms Green.
Mr Fridd said: "He is not proud of himself at all."
The court heard Walker has since reconciled with his wife.
