Married at First Sight: NI man makes history by appearing in first same-sex coupling

A Northern Irish man has made history by appearing as the first contestant on Married at First Sight who will be paired up with another person from the same sex.

Daniel McKee, who is from the north coast area of Northern Ireland and works in sales, appeared on the show's first episode, which aired on Monday night.

The 27-year-old was introduced as the first contestant who is seeking a same-sex coupling on the show, as he was grouped with the seven female contestants who will be his support group as the show progresses.

Introducing himself, Daniel said: “There's a lot of emotions going through my mind, I am nervous about how intense the experience is going to be.

"It’s amazing to be one half of the first gay couple. Gay marriage has only been legalised very recently in Northern Ireland which is absolutely shocking.

“Now that I can share my relationship with the world, I find that so important."

Clips showed Daniel surfing and exploring the north coast of Northern Ireland, with the 27 year old saying: "I'm very much a free spirit, I like doing things that give me a sense of adrenaline and a spice for life - dancing in the rain, singing, or connecting with new people. I'm all about the good vibes and experiencing life to its fullest."

After his brief appearance in the first episode on Monday, audiences can see Daniel tie the knot on tonight's episode.

He'll be paired with 39-year-old charity worker Matt, making history as the first gay couple to get married on the show.

In a teaser trailer ahead of tonight's episode, it appeared that there was already trouble ahead for the pair, with their 12 year age gap proving to be a sticking point.

Daniel is seen saying that the wedding ceremony is a "nerve-wracking experience", before being asked by his prospective husband, Matt, what his age is.

If the couple go through with the wedding, Matt and Daniel's experience on the show will see them go head first into a crash course in married life.

They’ll be whisked off on a honeymoon, before having to live together alongside the seven other couples, all of whom are matched by the show's 'love experts'.

Married at First Sight will continue on Channel 4 tonight, Tuesday August 31, at 9pm.
