Marriage actor Sean Bean defends new TV show as he slates 'boring' police dramas

Sean Bean might be in the bad-books with on-screen wife Nicola Walker - after blasting “boring” police dramas.

The actor stars in new BBC drama Marriage opposite Nicola, whose most famous role is as DCI Cassie Stewart in ITV smash Unforgotten.

Sean said that original dramas such as Marriage were a cut above police dramas which bored him to tears.

“I am bored of watching a lot of programmes these days, especially about detectives. I don’t know why people always making a story about detectives and police. They are so boring. I hate reading detective novels too.”

Sean added: “Almost all the characters end up repeating themselves and telling the next guy what just happened. It is just the same old kind of structure.”

Marriage has been praised by critics for its “ultra-realistic”, warts-and-all depiction of married life, which is filled with silences and mundane activities such as filling the dishwasher.

Sean made the comments in a video Q&A to promote the show, alongside Nicola and writer and director Stefan Golaszewski.

But Nicola appeared to see the funny side as she was seen chuckling and mouthed “it’s me” when he blasted generic police shows.

Nicola’s character was killed off in Unforgotten after six years in the role, which saw huge ratings.

The Mirror told earlier this week how some viewers hit out at Marriage, saying there was too much mumbling.

Many said they need subtitles to understand what they are saying.

The broadcaster has previously received thousands of complaints from people unable to hear the dialogue in dramas including Jamaica Inn, SS-GB and Happy Valley.

But a BBC spokeswoman said: ““Marriage went through all of the normal sound checks prior to broadcast and pre your enquiry we haven’t received any complaints.”

Golaszewski is behind BAFTA-winning drama Mum. He also created Him & Her, which was named Best Situation Comedy at the 2014 ceremony.
