'Marred by protests and criticism, William must think there was a target on his back'

In just a few days we have seen not just the shape but the perception of the monarchy change forever.

Prince William’s decision to face issues head-on and find solutions to problems as soon as they arrive tells us what type of king in waiting he really is.

His tour of the Caribbean with his wife Kate was not plain sailing by any stretch.

Marred by protests, an ambush by the Jamaican prime minister and criticism of speeches for not going far enough, William must have thought there was a target on his back at times.

But in an ever-changing world, the royals must change with the times.

The future king’s acceptance of this fact is the one thing above all else that will be key to his family’s survival.

The inquiry into what went wrong on this tour will be long and detailed.

But so should the section on the triumphs which should be celebrated in both William and Kate managed for there were many.

The Cambridges and indeed the rest of The Firm cannot risk living in an echo chamber, for as William said in his address in the Bahamas and unprecedented post-tour statement at the weekend, the will of the people will shape his destiny as much as their own.

The acceptance that if this means him not leading across a dwindling number of realms or indeed head up the 54 Commonwealth nations, can not be underestimated.

We have witnessed a shockwave moment in the history of the monarchy.

But after emerging from a series of PR nightmares and controversies, somehow, the future feels much brighter with Willam at the wheel when his time comes.
