Marquee Sports Network, the Cubs’ TV home, announced the hiring of Jon “Boog” Sciambi as its play-by-play announcer. Sciambi, who will join analyst Jim Deshaies, has been with ESPN full-time since 2010. He has been the radio voice for “Sunday Night Baseball” and the TV voice for “Wednesday Night Baseball” since 2014. He will continue to work as a multiplatform broadcaster for ESPN.
“Having the opportunity to come to Wrigley Field and call games for the Chicago Cubs every day is surreal,” said Sciambi, who was the Braves’ TV announcer from 2007-2009 and the Marlins’ radio voice from 1997-2004. “It really doesn’t get better than that. Chicago is one of the best cities, and Wrigley is the best ballpark out there.”
Sciambi replaces Len Kasper, who left to call the White Sox on their new radio flagship, ESPN 1000. Kasper had been with the team since 2005, tying Hall of Famer Harry Caray with 16 seasons in the Cubs’ booth. Hall of Famer Jack Brickhouse has the most at 34.
“There was no shortage of interest in this position, and deservedly so,” Marquee general manager Mike McCarthy said. “It is one of the premier spots in sports broadcast history, and no one is more deserving of the seat than Jon. His personality, energy and baseball credibility make him the perfect choice to succeed the legends who have preceded him.”
Sciambi, a New York native and Boston College graduate, called the Cubs-Marlins wild-card series for ESPN this past season. He also shared the ESPN booth with Cubs manager David Ross when Ross was an analyst for the network.
“Jon’s deep baseball knowledge coupled with his dry humor and quick wit will no doubt bring Cubs fans a new level of entertainment as they watch Cubs games on Marquee beginning with the 2021 season,” Marquee senior vice president of programming and production Mike Santini said. “We are very fortunate to have him.”
