Marple flood alert: Army called in to help as residents told to 'prepare a bag of essentials' in case

Residents in Marple are being advised to 'prepare a bag' of essentials in case of flooding in the area.

There is a risk the situation at Toddbrook Reservoir could affect Marple due to the water levels rising at the River Goyt if the dam gives way.

Over the weekend a factsheet compiled by Stockport Council was handed out to Marple residents by GMP, the fire service and British Army soldiers.

The fact sheet advises residents to prepare a bag including medicines and insurance documents in case the village is flooded.

It also gives advice on precautions to take when returning to flood damaged homes and insurance tips.

No areas of Stockport are being evacuated at this stage, but residents are being urged to 'familiarise themselves with the fact sheet, stay alert, and observe flood levels'.

Overnight sandbags were placed at doorways and other preparations were made in case of flooding.

An Environment Agency flood alert remains in place for the Middle River Mersey catchment area, which includes Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston.

Another warning covers the River Mersey Uplands catchment area which incorporates Hyde, Ashton-under-Lyne, Denton, Stalybridge and Glossop.

Assistant Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, Nick Bailey, Strategic Lead for the partnership response, said: “I would like to thank colleagues, partners and volunteers who are supporting the response in Greater Manchester.

“We often see emergency responders react when a disaster has occurred. On this occasion, responders and their support teams are working 24/7 preparing for a potential incident which we all hope will not occur.

“This has seen responders cancel their plans at late notice, ensuring the preparations are as good as they can be and helping keep residents in Stockport and Greater Manchester safe.”
