Maro Itoje injury latest: England face anxious wait after lock suffers knee injury

England must wait until Tuesday to learn the full extent of Maro Itoje’s knee injury.

The lock is unlikely to face France at Twickenham on Sunday after limping off in the second half of the 32-20 win over Ireland in Dublin.

Itoje was due to have a scan last night, amid concerns he may have damaged ligaments. Eddie Jones’s 36-man squad will reassemble tomorrow.

England know France’s monstrous pack and silky backs will provide a stern test, especially because they will be smarting after throwing away a 16-0 half-time lead against Wales in a 24-19 defeat on Friday night.

France’s starting pack in Paris was one of the heaviest on record and they were able to call on hefty, young replacements such as Demba Bamba and Felix Lambey.

“They have some very big guys,” said Mako Vunipola, who was England’s man of the match in Dublin with 25 tackles.

“We’re under no illusion how tough the French will be. They’ll be looking to bounce back and there’s no better way to do that than away against us.”
