Marmara island fire: Resort popular with Brits ravaged by forest blaze

A large blaze has broken out on the popular Turkish island of Marmara.

Two houses have been destroyed in the blaze which is said to be fast-moving on the island.

Some homes have been evacuated.

Suleyman Aksoy, the mayor of Marmara Adalar, said that the strong winds are making extinguishing efforts difficult.

He added: "When pine cones explode, it acts as a bomb, progressing metres and spreading fire.

"If the helicopter doesn't interfere, the fire will grow. Customers and citizens in some settlements are evacuated."
