PITTSBURGH _ Giancarlo Stanton left the Miami Marlins' game Saturday with an apparent right hand or wrist injury.
Stanton took a 95.3-mph fastball off the hand in the first inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates, hopping around in pain before heading to first base. After a trainer checked him out _ and he continued shaking his arm and crouching over _ Stanton exited.
There was no immediate word on Stanton's status.
Ichiro Suzuki pinch-ran and scored on Marcell Ozuna's double for an early Marlins lead. The Marlins were up 3-0 after the top of the first.
Pittsburgh righty Trevor Williams was the one who plunked Stanton. Williams is a former Marlins prospect, sent to the Pirates as part of the negotiations that allowed Miami to hire Jim Benedict as vice president of pitching development.
Stanton to this point has remained healthy, one of his biggest hurdles in recent years, including a broken left hand in June 2015.
In 60 games, Stanton has 16 homers and 42 RBIs in addition to a slash line of .288/.365/.566.
The Marlins have not had much luck health wise this season and are without three out of four starting infielders (Martin Prado, Adeiny Hechavarria, Justin Bour) and their primary backup (Miguel Rojas).
