The Marlins made an unexpected move prior to Monday's non-waiver trade deadline: sending right-hander Colin Rea, acquired from the Padres in last week's seven-player trade, back to San Diego.
In exchange, Luis Castillo, one of the four players Miami gave up in the deal, will return to the Marlins' farm system. The rest of the players involved, including right-hander Andrew Cashner, are not involved in this new, separate trade.
The Marlins did not make any other trades before the deadline.
Rea left his start Saturday with elbow soreness and was later diagnosed with a sprained right elbow. He gave up one hit and struck out four in 3 1/3 innings.
Castillo never pitched for a Padres affiliate. The 23-year-old will likely return to High-A Jupiter, where he has posted a 2.25 ERA and 0.97 WHIP this season, his first full one as a starter. His high-90s fastball makes him an intriguing prospect, albeit one a bit old given his progression to date through the minors.
