JUPITER, Fla. _ The ball flew off Jazz Chisholm's bat in the fifth inning and kept going. And kept going. And went a little more. It finally fell beyond the outfield wall in right-center field at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
The Miami Marlins' top shortstop prospect had his first home run of spring training in Sunday's 7-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
According to Statcast, Chisholm hit Genesis Cabrera's fastball 395 feet with a 112.5 mph exit velocity.
"We've been able to see (the power) in batting practice for the most part," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "You see the bat speed. It's just fun to watch, but more than anything, you're seeing him see the ball good."
Chisholm, acquired by the Marlins at the July 31 trade deadline in a straight up trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks for Zac Gallen, became the latest of the Marlins' high-end prospects to hit home runs. He is the fourth player among the Marlins' top-30 prospects to hit a home run this season, joining Jerar Encarnacion, Jesus Sanchez and Lewin Diaz.
"I was a little more aggressive today," Chisholm said. "It's still on strikes. I'm really tapping into driving the ball more into the rest of spring training."
Chisholm, the Marlins' No. 3 overall prospect, was an early spark for Miami this spring training and has been part of a wave of rising prospects aiming to maximize their time in big-league camp. The Marlins view him as their shortstop of the future, and he'll most likely start the season in Triple A Wichita.
And while the home run goes down as a milestone, Chisholm was more impressed personally with the plate appearance prior to the home run.
After getting to a 2-2 count and fouling off the fifth pitch from Cardinals starter Dakota Hudson, Chisholm took a pitch low and a pitch inside to draw a walk.
