Marlins place Dietrich on DL, hope newcomer Arcia can be power threat

MIAMI _ Derek Dietrich became the latest addition to the Miami Marlins' crowded disabled list Tuesday.

Not with a new injury, but one that has lingered since he was hit by a pitch on the right knee during Aug. 13 against the White Sox.

It was the 22nd time the so-called Man of Steel has been hit this season, and this one not only took a toll but worsened in recent days as Dietrich continued to play.

He is on the 15-day DL retroactive to Aug. 19 and was replaced on the active roster by outfielder Oswaldo Arcia, claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay.

"We talked about our situation as far getting into the playoffs. If we get there, (Dietrich) is going to be the second baseman, for the most part," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said, referring to Dee Gordon being ineligible for the postseason due to a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs that led to a suspension earlier in the season.

"We've got to get this guy (Dietrich) healthy and not let this thing linger. We wanted to take this time to get him right."

In another move, Justin Bour (ankle sprain) was transferred to the 60-day DL, but it was procedural. The slugging first baseman hasn't played since July 2 and will be eligible to return as soon as he is healthy, sometime in September.

The Marlins just got closer A.J. Ramos back from a fractured finger. The list of walking wounded remains significant with Dietrich joining Bour, Giancarlo Stanton (groin strain), left-handed starters Adam Conley (finger tendinitis) and Wei-Yin Chen (elbow sprain) and reliever Bryan Morris (back surgery).

Mattingly said it's all part of the obstacles of a long season that must be overcome.

"Everybody is going to have injuries. You can't sit here and leave yourself a security blanket. Don't leave yourself an excuse," Mattingly said. "A.J. is back. (Bour) is going to be back.

"We're going to get some guys back. We've had our share (of injuries) at this point, but we're like everyone else."

Morris is slated to behind pitching in rehab games in the Gulf Coast League this week.
