CHICAGO _ The Miami Marlins are hitting the pause button on Justin Bour's big season.
The slugging first baseman landed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with a left ankle contusion. The club recalled catcher/first baseman Tomas Telis from Triple-A New Orleans to fill Bour's roster spot and perhaps absorb some of his playing time.
Bour got hurt while rounding first base on a double Saturday. He woke up sore Sunday, pinch-hit in the Marlins' win and had an MRI Monday in Chicago when the discomfort didn't go away. The MRI revealed a bone bruise and inflammation, Bour said.
Tyler Moore stands to benefit most from Bour's absence. Moore was slashing .194/.211/.389 with two homers and eight RBI in two stints with Miami _ mostly as a pinch-hitter _ entering play Tuesday.
Behind Moore on the depth chart, the Marlins could use Telis and even starting catcher J.T. Realmuto at first base. Realmuto spent part of spring training learning the new position to offer a bit more flexibility, but has played their only once (two innings May 16) in the regular season.
It's not clear how long Bour will be out. He indicated Monday night his expectation that this will be a short-term injury, but stressed that he didn't want to put a timetable on it and that the important thing was to get healthy.
Notably, this ankle injury is different from the one that sidelined him for two months last summer. A high sprain of his right ankle kept him out of action from early July until early September, derailing what had been a promising season.
