The Miami Marlins hope slugger Giancarlo Stanton will return to the lineup Tuesday at home against the Oakland Athletics, manager Don Mattingly said Sunday.
Stanton left the Marlins' game Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first inning after getting hit on the right wrist with a fastball. He was not in the lineup Sunday, as expected, but Mattingly said Stanton could be available to pinch-hit.
"Still a little swollen, little sore. We'll see," Mattingly said. "As the game goes on, he'll try to get loose. We'll see if he's available."
Stanton was receiving treatment for his wrist contusion Saturday night and Sunday morning at PNC Park.
If all continues to go well, a return Tuesday _ after missing just one game _ is on the table.
"That's what we're hoping," Mattingly said. "Right now, that's what we're hoping. And I won't do anything [Sunday] that would jeopardize that. If they tell me that this can set him back a little bit, then I wouldn't do it [Sunday]. I would sacrifice [Sunday]."
Without Stanton on Sunday, catcher J.T. Realmuto moved into the No. 2 spot in the lineup and Ichiro Suzuki got the start in right field. Second baseman Dee Gordon also had the day off, with shortstop JT Riddle moving to leadoff and Christian Colon starting at second.
