Marlins' Edinson Volquez, JT Riddle out for the season with injuries

The Marlins will be without their starting shortstop and their Opening Day starting pitcher for the rest of the season.

Manager Don Mattingly said Tuesday that both JT Riddle and Edinson Volquez won't play again in 2017 due to injuries.

Mattingly said the results of a MRI on Riddle's left shoulder revealed a more significant problem than the tendinitis that was first diagnosed, and surgery is an option for the rookie shortstop. The news was no better for Volquez, who hurled the only no-hitter in the Majors so far this season.

Volquez, who last pitched on July 5, received a second opinion on his injured left knee that left no doubt he would be able to pitch again this season.

"Not good at all," Mattingly said of Volquez's injured left knee, which might also require surgery. "He's definitely out."

Volquez, whom the Marlins signed to a two-year deal over the winter, is 4-8 with a 4.19 ERA in 17 starts. Volquez is due to make $13 million next season. Riddle, who displaced shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria and prompted his trade to the Rays, hit .250 in 70 games. Riddle re-injured his left shoulder while making a diving play on July 19.

The Marlins are also missing first baseman Justin Bour and third baseman Martin Prado with injuries.

Bour, who is out with an oblique injury, could return in anywhere from four to six weeks, Mattingly said. It's even possible he might not make it back before the end of the season.

"It's going to be a while," Mattingly said.

Prado, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee last week, could be back in a few weeks.

"We expect to see Martin at some point before the year's over," Mattingly said.
