Marlins' bullpen falters in costly 8-6 loss to the Mets

NEW YORK _ The Marlins bullpen is a major reason they are in playoff contention through half of this season.

They recently added veteran Fernando Rodney to bolster that strong late-inning relief.

It failed them Monday in one of their most costly defeats of the season.

The Mets scored six runs over three innings against Marlins' relievers to erase an early 6-0 deficit and hand Miami an 8-6 loss at Citi Field.

Yoenis Cespedes' two-run double to right-center field off Rodney gave the Mets the lead for good, scoring Travis d'Arnaud and Neil Walker.

Rodney had only allowed one earned run in 30 2/3 prior innings this season for a 0.29 ERA entering the game. Rodney had pitched a scoreless inning in each of his two relief appearances for the Marlins since being acquired in a trade with the Padres last Thursday.

The Marlins put two runners on in the ninth off Jeurys Familia, but the Mets' closer nailed down his National League-leading 29th save in as many opportunities.

After the Mets hit a pair of solo home runs off starter Tom Koehler, they plated two runs against Kyle Barraclough in the sixth and two more against David Phelps in the seventh.

The Marlins tagged 11 hits off Matt Harvey and chased him from the game by the fourth inning with a 6-0 lead.

Harvey had his worst start since May 24 and lasted only 3 2/3 innings in consecutive starts.

One of the six runs Harvey allowed was unearned as it came off his throwing error and led to the Marlins scoring three in the fourth.

Martin Prado hit a one-hopper back to the mound that Harvey fielded quickly, but threw low and wide and got away from d'Arnaud. Instead of starting a double play, Chris Johnson scored. Christian Yelich followed with a single that drove in Adeiny Hechavarria and J.T. Realmuto, who each singled earlier in the inning.

Realmuto totaled four hits and has hit seven in a row following his three hits Sunday at Fort Bragg, N.C.

The Marlins took a 3-0 lead in the second on the first of three hits by Johnson, a double by Hechavarria and a single by Koehler _ his second hit of the season.

After giving up four runs in the first inning in each of his past two starts, Koehler got through the first frame Monday unscathed on six pitches.

The Mets did some damage to Koehler, however, as d'Arnaud and Curtis Granderson each hit solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings respectively.

Koehler exited after five innings in which he allowed seven hits, walked one and did not have a strikeout.

Ichiro Suzuki led off the eighth inning with a double that put him within 10 hits of the 3,000-hit mark for his career.
