Marlins agree to contract with outfielder Corey Dickerson

Looking to upgrade the offense, the Miami Marlins are adding a consistent left-handed bat to the lineup.

The Marlins have agreed to a two-year contract with free-agent outfielder Corey Dickerson, according to the MLB Network. The deal is worth a reported $17.5 million. Dickerson, 30, fit all the parameters Miami was targeting in a free agent _ a left-handed hitting outfielder on a short contract who can provide an immediate offensive boost.

In seven MLB seasons, the left-handed hitter has posted a .286/.328/.504 (117 wRC+) slash line with 115 home runs and 190 doubles. Splitting the 2019 season between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies, Dickerson hit .304/.341/.565 (127 wRC+) with 12 home runs and 28 doubles in 78 games. The outfielder missed the first half of the season with a posterior right shoulder strain.

An All-Star in 2017 with the Tampa Bay Rays, Dickerson likely projects in left field, where he's spent the majority of his career. While he's spent some time in right and center, he's played 547 of his 571 games in left field.

With Isan Diaz and Jonathan Villar as the only lefty bats, Dickerson addresses a hole in the Marlins lineup. The veteran outfielder has been a consistent presence during his time in the majors. Over his past three full seasons, Dickerson is averaging 35 doubles and 21 home runs per season. Last season, the Marlins ranked last in most offensive statistical categories.

Dickerson is the fourth position player the Marlins have added to the big league roster this offseason. Miami earlier acquired Villar and first baseman Jesus Aguilar, who both project to start. The Marlins also have veteran catcher Francisco Cervelli to serve as the backup. In addition, Miami signed former All-Star outfielder Matt Kemp to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

With the offseason additions, the Marlins will have a number of outfield permutations next season. In addition to Dickerson, Anderson will be an everyday starter _ either playing at third base or right field. Villar, Garrett Cooper and Harold Ramirez are additional options in the corner spots. In center, Jon Berti, Magneuris Sierra and Lewis Brinson will all vie for time. Talented outfield prospects Monte Harrison and Jesus Sanchez will likely be promoted during the season as well.
