Adeiny Hechavarria landed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with a left oblique strain. The Miami Marlins called up infielder J.T. Riddle from Triple-A New Orleans to take his roster spot.
It is not clear when Hechavarria's injury occurred. He went 2 for 5 in the Marlins' 8-1 win over the New York Mets Saturday night. In five games, Hechavarria is 4 for 20.
Utility infielder Miguel Rojas will likely receive the bulk of the playing time at shortstop in Hechavarria's absence.
Riddle, 25, is in the major leagues for the first time. He has primarily been a shortstop since the Marlins took him in the 13th round out of the University of Kentucky in the 2013 draft. Riddle has also seen time at third and second base.
Riddle is the Marlins' No. 12 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He has impressed the organization with an offseason in which he put on 15 pounds of muscle _ he said during spring training his 6-foot-1 frame was up over 190 pounds _ and a spring training in which he slashed .269/.345/.462 in 27 Grapefruit League at-bats.
In six games for New Orleans, Riddle was 6 for 14 with a double.
