Markwayne Mullin said he regret belittling the death of anti-ICE protester Alex Pretti during a confirmation hearing to become the new head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
After the 37-year-old nurse was fatally shot by a federal agent in Minneapolis in January, the Republican senator told Fox News that Pretti was a “deranged individual that came in to cause max damage”.
On Wednesday (18 March), he told senators that he regrets his comments. “I went out there too fast. I was responding immediately without the facts. That’s my fault.”
When asked if would issue an apology, he replied: “We’ll let the investigation go through, and if I’m proven wrong, then I will, absolutely.”
