Marks & Spencer sets out plan for unused stock after huge sales post lockdown are predicted

Marks & Spencer is reportedly in talks to set aside its unused stock and roll it out across its stores in Spring/Summer 2021.

High street stores were ordered to close on March 23 meaning many retailers are now left with piles of unsold stock - with retail experts predicting this could mean huge sales for customers to look forward to once they reopen.

Primark has already hinted at plans to host a bumper clear out after building up more than £1.5billion worth of unused stock due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sophie Lund-Yates, Hargreaves Lansdown analyst, said: "When Primark was ordered to shut its doors mountains of inventory was already on its way, ready to replenish stores which are in hibernation.

"For consumers this could mean bumper sales when shops reopen, as sales stickers are one of the quickest ways to shift excess items."

But clothing giants including M&S, Next and Debenhams are sizing up alternatives to huge price cuts across the board by recycling items for 2021, reports MirrorOnline.

It is understood the plan to delay selling the stock could be applied to at least half of unsold ranges at M&S, subject to when stores can reopen.

Next recently warned it plans to do the same, with the chain hoping to carry over £330million worth of stock for spring and summer 2021.

It said: "This product is generally basic products, for example summer t-shirts and chinos."
