Marks & Spencer 'offends' customers with its unusual Pancake Day recipe

For anyone who was unaware today marks Pancake Day (or Pancake Tuesday as its better known in Liverpool) .

It's the day when the majority of us will be stuffing ours faces with as many pancakes as we can stomach, however Marks & Spencer's latest offering has caused controversy among its customers.

Last month it unveiled its Percy Pig sauce to spread over pancakes, but having tried the recipe, many shoppers aren't convinced.

Posting a picture of the pancake serving suggestion on Facebook, the official M&S account wrote: "On your marks... FLIP! Our first ever Percy Pig Dessert sauce is here! Serve it on Percy-style pancakes with our ready-made pancakes filled with fresh strawberries, Percy sweets and jazzie sprinkles.

(M&S)

"How will you decorate yours?  #Thisisnotjust a pancake idea, this is a Percy Pig pancake idea!"

However it was met with a mixed reactions, with one shopper even describing it as "wrong on so many levels", reports MEN.

Underneath the post another said: "I thought M&S we’re trying to encourage healthier eating so why a sugary sauce(presumably) and sweets. A dessert aimed at children!!!"

"What happened to simple, but delicious pancakes with a sprinkling of sugar and some lemon juice? Why does everything have to be so faffy and fancy-looking today?"

A third said: "What’s wrong with pancakes with sugar a lemon juice. Looks so sickly."

However, others have embraced the spirit of Pancake Day, and seem keen to try it out for themselves.

One said: "Well done M&S love the Percy pigs taste great and soft and chewy not hard, and a good idea having different characters, sadly you can’t please everyone."
