Marks & Spencer is selling mini savoury 'cheese eggs' for Easter

Marks & Spencer has announced it won’t only be selling sweet chocolate eggs this Easter but will also be adding a savoury offering to its range.

The high street shop will be launching its first ever cheese Easter egg from Wednesday 18 March.

The wax-covered mini eggs are made from Barber’s farmhouse cheddar and have a vintage Red Leicester ‘yolk’ middle.

Each egg has been hand-dipped in a duck egg blue wax ‘shell’ and is roughly the size of a large hen egg.

They will be sold in a cardboard egg box of six for £8.50. And will be available across almost 600 M&S stores in the UK.

A larger cheesy egg (roughly the size of a goose egg) will also be available from next week for £8.

M&S product developer, Rosie Eiduks says: “Delicious as it is, we know not everyone loves chocolate.

"Those with a more savoury-tooth can sometimes feel left out of the fun at Easter, so this year, we wanted to create a must-have gift for cheese lovers too!”

“Beautiful served on an Easter lunch cheese board, sliced into a sandwich or salad, or loaded on top of crackers.”

In February Marks & Spencer announced they would be re-branding their popular Colin the caterpillar cake as an Easter bunny.

The cake, which was covered in milk chocolate and adorned with mini carrot and egg-shaped decorations.

But the rabbit-inspired cake was criticised by customers who said it reminded them of Donnie Darko and looked “demonic”.

In May 2019 the shop was praised for introducing vegetarian-friendly Percy Pig sweets.

After years of selling the sweets with a gelatine recipe, they decided to remove it from the list of ingredients.
