Marks & Spencer flags seven Northern Ireland locations for new food stores

Marks & Spencer has identified seven locations where it wants to set up new food stores in Northern Ireland.

The retailer has announced its interest in opening new food stores here in a document published by property firm CBRE.

M&S is seeking sites on the edge of centre or outside of towns for a store of at least 15,000 sq ft.

It's seeking sites of two acres or more which are prominent and highly visable.

The seven towns it is looking at are Antrim, Armagh, Downpatrick, Dungannon, Magherafelt, Newtownards and Carrickfergus.

These areas are among a long list of a number of towns where the retailer 'would like to be'.

M&S is seeking sites on major roads with car parking and would consider moving into an existing retail units, with freehold or leasehold both considered.

This comes a month after the chairman of Marks & Spencer warned that customers in Northern Ireland could face a "substantial reduction in food supply" as well as price increases later this year due to Brexit.

The supermarket chain had to cancel its pre-Christmas food ordering service for customers here as they were not sure they'd be able to deliver the service after the Northern Ireland Protocol's grace period finished at the end of September.

Archie Norman added that supply issues are "about to get worse" when the protocol is fully implemented from October.

Writing for the Mail on Sunday, the supermarket boss said: "The result would be substantial reduction in food supply from the UK to Northern Ireland and an increase in prices for its citizens.

"Already, M&S has had to cancel sales of our Christmas Food to Order, our top-end range service, into Northern Ireland because we just don’t know if we can get it there."
