Marks and Spencer to axe 'hundreds of jobs' with staff at risk in Edinburgh

Marks & Spencer is reportedly planning to axe hundreds of jobs this week after sales have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Sky News, the high street retailer is set to make an announcement over the job losses in the coming days.

The retailer will become the latest in a string of high street names to carry out restructuring plans in the wake of the outbreak.

Companies such as John Lewis, Boots and Debenhams have already announced hundreds of job losses, reports the Mirror.

Sources are reported to have told Sky News that a total of "several thousand jobs" could be at risk as chief executive Steve Rowe accelerates the ongoing restructuring of the business.

Throughout lockdown, 27,000 M&S employees - out of a total of 78,000 - were furloughed under the government's job retention scheme in a bid to avoid mass redundancies.

However, the UK Government support for employers will end on October 31, with the scheme to be gradually wound down from August.

Marks and Spencer operates at least ten stores in Edinburgh, including on Princes Street, at Craigleith Retail Park and at The Gyle shopping centre.
