Marks and Spencer store in Weston-super-Mare to close for final time

The Marks and Spencer store in the centre of Weston-super-Mare has been trading for more than 110 years.

But sadly it will serve its final customer today, as the chain is closing the branch which lies between the high street and Sovereign Shopping Centre.

The closure is part of M&S's plan to close 17 of its stores across the UK.

Speaking at the time the closure was announced, the brand's head of region for the South West John Dorrington, said: “Deciding to propose the closure of our Weston-super-Mare store has been extremely difficult.

"Over the coming weeks our priority will be supporting each colleague individually as we go through the consultation process."

Marks & Spencer  has been a key feature in the town's High Street for decades and takes up a large unit within the centre.

As well as selling clothing and household wares there is also a cafe and a food hall.

The M&S foodhall at the Flowerdown Retail Park in the town will remain. Customers wanting a full M&S experience will have to travel to the store at  Cribbs Causeway or use the click and collect service. A new foodhall is also due to open in Bristol in May.

The news of its closure came just months after North Somerset Council paid £22million to purchase the Sovereign Centre.

Although M&S own the majority of its building, it still rents a section from North Somerset Council.
