Marks and Spencer's new Colin the Caterpillar cake is frightening some shoppers

Colin the Caterpillar is a staple of childrens' birthday parties since he was introduced 30 years ago.

The Marks and Spencer cake has gone through a few different versions over the years, including Colin's wife, Connie, Halloween and Christmas Colins, to mini rolls and even massive wedding cakes.

The supermarket has just introduced an Easter Bunny version of the caterpillar, featuring white chocolate rabbit ears and orange carrots on his back.

But caterpillar-rabbit hybrid hasn't gone down well with everyone, Wales Online reports.

When a picture of the cake was shared by Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK  people weren't shy about sharing their opinions.

One unimpressed commenter said: "Most disturbing looking bunny I’ve ever seen!"

Another joked: "Looks like the bunny from Donnie Darko. They should save it for Halloween, it look demonic.

"An Easter bunny that's a caterpillar. Poor confused bunnypillar." A third quipped.

Someone else wrote: "It looks possessed and since when has a rabbit had 6 legs... Defo won't be buying"

Some people worried that cake may look too scary for their children, with other branding it as 'confusing'.

One Facebook user wrote: "Jeez looks like the rabbit from donnie darko!!!! My daughter would freak out looking at that."

But not everyone was creeped out, one person said: "It's a fabulous tasty cake I have to say x"

The cake will be available in M&S stores around the UK from March 31.
