Marks and Spencer is selling a pizza with a base made of meat

Whatever toppings you prefer, or wherever you stand on the controversial pineapple question, most of us would agree on what a basic pizza looks like.

But it seems the chefs at Marks and Spencer have got other ideas, after they revealed their latest take on the takeaway classic.

The Mirror reports the long-running chain has taken the unusual step of swapping the traditional dough base with one made out of pork.

Using 100 per cent British outdoor-bred British pork, M&S' new ‘meat’zza’ is now therefore completely gluten free, providing a no-carb twist on one of the nation’s favourite foods.

While Slimming World fans may already be familiar with meat-based pizzas thanks to the dieting group's popular Pizza Topped Chicken recipe, the invention is actually down to an even more famous chef: Nigella Lawson.

Supposedly shooting to fame back in 2012 after Nigella featured a recipe in her best-selling book, Nigellisima, M&S are the first to bring to a ready-made version of the pork pizza to the high street.

Setting you back either £4 for either the Margherita Meat’zza (320g) and Spicy Pepperoni Meat’zza (310g) or three for £10, each pizza serves two people.

Sarah Loxton, M&S product developer said, ‘We’re a nation of pizza lovers yet also looking at ways to reduce our carb intake, so this seemed like the perfect solution!

"Most importantly, the meat’zzas taste great but they’re also an easy family choice for busy weekends when everyone is having too much fun in the garden to spend all the time in the kitchen!

"Ready in under 15 minutes, my family and I love eating ours served with a simple rocket salad and tomatoes.”
