Marks and Spencer customers in for a treat with launch of new Scottish delicacy

Marks and Spencer have a new addition to their shelves in stores around Scotland.

M&S shoppers rejoice because you can now pick up the classic rustic pie in your next big shop.

But wait, this is not just a pie...it's a scotch pie.

For the first time ever, M&S will be adding Bell's Scotch pies to their shelves for their Scottish customers.

The family-owned pie makers started selling baked goods in the 1930's and have baked Scotland’s number one Scotch pies for generations.

They are now a staple for family dinners across the country.

Based in Shotts, Lanarkshire, Bells’ famous Scotch Pie is the number one selling pie in Scotland, with over 15 million produced and consumed each year.

Ronnie Miles, Managing Director at Bells Food Group said: “Bringing our best-selling Scotch pies to Marks & Spencer is a milestone for us and has topped off our 90th anniversary year.

“Marks & Spencer is a favourite with Scottish families, much like our pies. We know that our customers will be thrilled to see them on the shelves.”

Bells Food Group is Scotland’s number one pie brand and it is estimated that 10 per cent of the nation’s population eat at least one Bells pie each every week.

History of the Scotch pie

Scotch pies have been around for hundreds of years so it is difficult to pin point it's exact origin but the humble pie has been a staple to diets for Scottish workmen due to their robust pastry.

The tough casing allows the pie to be eaten with one hand and without any cutlery.

The filling used originally was spiced mutton due to the affordable price and ease of getting the ingredients. However now beef is more commonly used along with a range other ingredients such as onion, mace and black pepper.

Bells’ Scotch Pies are now available at 61 Marks & Spencer’s Foodhalls across Scotland.
