Marko Grujic makes Liverpool transfer plea as European rivals ponder summer move

Marko Grujic wants to stay at Hertha Berlin for another year - but acknowledges Liverpool will have the final say on his future.

Grujic has been in impressive form for the Bundesliga side since agreeing a season-long loan last summer.

Despite being hampered by an ankle ligament damage problem that sidelined him for two months earlier in the campaign, the 22-year-old has been hailed by Hertha boss Pal Dardai as "by far the best midfielder" he'd seen during more than 20 years at the club.

The two players Liverpool cannot afford to lose in Premier League title battle with Man City

Grujic made the last of 14 appearances for Liverpool in December 2017 and spent the second half of last season on loan at Cardiff City, helping them win promotion to the Premier League.

And when asked if he was approaching the end of his time at Hertha, he said: "I hope not! Because I feel very comfortable in Berlin.

"Hertha gave me the great opportunity to play in the Bundesliga.

"I'm still pretty young, for me this time at Hertha - with the exception of injuries - has been brilliant so far to show my qualities.

James Pearce talks to Marko Grujic: Is a return to compete in the Liverpool midfield possible? NOT FOR USE UNTIL TUESDAY

"Ultimately, it's not up to me. But if I could choose myself, I would stay with Hertha for another year, or maybe even two years, to make a very good name for myself by improving all my qualities. And that's only possible if you play in every game. "

Lazio and Galatasaray are both believed to be tracking Grujic, but the player said: "Yes, Hertha is my favourite. I would love to stay here longer.

"My self-confidence has increased due to so much match practice. My defensive behavior has also improved a lot because of the games."

"And if Liverpool ever wanted to sell me and I could decide, it would be great if Hertha made an offer."

Grujic was talking to German publication Bild about his future, and was asked whether he would have enjoyed playing a part in Liverpool's title challenge this season rather than being at Hertha.

"Of course it would be great to be there," he said. "But for the development of my career at this time it is much more important to always be in the starting XI than to be mentioned by name."

Grujic was Jurgen Klopp's first signing as Liverpool boss when snaring the midfielder from Red Star Belgrade in January 2016.

"The last time we talked when I was in England because of my injury (earlier in the season)," added Grujic.

"He is one of the best coaches in the world. He said that I am doing well at Hertha.

"We will see what happens next season, now I am concentrating on the remaining games this season with Hertha."
