Markets fall further: gilt yields update

The UK's borrowing costs may not, after all, be the lowest they have ever been. But that hasn't stopped the markets from falling further - the FTSE 100 hit 5,199 a short time ago, 132 points down on the day.

As for gilts, it appears that suggestions that gilts were yielding less than ever before were wide of the mark.

A book extract says that UK consol yields fell to 2.21% in 1897 - so we are in fact only really at a post-imperial low, not an all-time low.
