We are a firm of 19 with a niche presence in 20 countries where we export fantastic artisan Halen Mon seasalt. We wanted to raise our profile regionally nationally and internationally with £2,000. We found we were eligible for registering a Protected Food Name in the EU and that if we qualified under the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) category we would be the first in Wales and the 60th Protected Food Name in the UK. We carried out research, filled in numerous forms, employed a historian and the Welsh government and DEFRA also helped us.
We got through all the bureaucracy and in January we heard our name on Radio 4 Farming Today as being Wales’ first PDO. This led to seven mentions on on Radio 4’s Today programme, media interviews, mentions in the broadsheets, a reception in London from DEFRA and legal accreditation from the EU and extra sales on our website.
It made us eligible to join marketing missions and we joined a mission to Japan within a couple of months, which has resulted in more orders. Turnover is up more than 25% both over the last year and the last quarter.
David and Alison Lea-Wilson are the directors of The Anglesey Sea Salt Company.
