I manage a creative services company in Burnley, Lancashire. While our work is great, people buy into people, and someone getting a new website or online sales strategy is not news. So rather than talking about the work, I'm pushing our next best asset - me!
We have clients all over the UK but the main focus of the marketing has been in the North West. Manchester is a hugely vibrant city, Lancashire a thriving county and Burnley was recognised as the most enterprising part of the UK by the prime minister and Prince Charles so there is plenty to talk about.
The marketing programme has combined a number of very cost-effective tactics. I've sat on roundtable debates organised by North West-based business magazines and written advice articles for North West blogs, websites and forums. I've got involved with local charities and have been welcomed into business groups. I'm planning a business inspiration event next year and all this is great for getting the company name out there.
It's working: we're taking on an average of four new clients a month and I've doubled the size of the company in the last quarter. We're moving into new offices and by building relationships with regional business leaders and journalists; we are getting our name shared.
When your PR and marketing budget has a limit, and you need to focus on how to get your business name out there, looking close to home and promoting your people can prove a great strategy.
