My business is just over a year old and with very little marketing spend I have secured its future and created demand for my services by positioning myself as an authority in my field.

I do this through a content strategy that focuses not only on publishing insights but also on openly seeking and responding to people’s queries on various social media channels. I’m giving away my advice for free, as I genuinely want to improve marketing for everyone, even those who can’t pay me!

LinkedIn is the most valuable for this approach. Rather than ask them to get in touch privately as most people do, I openly answer their question, so others can also see the advice I give.

It is the most effective sales channel with 30% of my sales leads and 40% of clients coming from this approach, which is more significant given the fact I am not directly selling to them. That is just my fee-paying clients, but the impact is far wider as I have helped many small businesses and organisations for free.

I have also been invited to speak at various events, which has resulted in press coverage and more referrals. Free methods of promoting my expertise and services, that don’t require too great a time commitment, have strengthened my network and have had a far deeper, longer lasting effect than paid advertising.
