Marketing and PR 2015-16 competition entry: Komodo Learning

Sara Dalzell, digital marketing manager at Komodo Learning, explains why the business should win the marketing and PR category of the Guardian Small Business Showcase competition.

Komodo Learning is an online maths tuition programme for primary children, co-founded by Ged, a former teacher who recognised that traditional maths teaching was failing many children and that early intervention could be effective and life-changing.

Komodo’s marketing and PR is based on two things:

1. The importance of parental involvement in children’s education

2. Many parents feel ill-equipped to help their children with maths.

Given these two facts, our marketing and PR strategy is to produce engaging and valuable, free resources for parents, passing on our expertise to help them support their children’s learning.

We’ve noticed that by creating genuinely useful resources and using social media and online PR to amplify the reach, our message reaches an audience far beyond paid advertising.

Komodo regularly produces articles, guides and videos, explaining and simplifying the areas of the primary maths curriculum that children and parents need a little help with.

Our ‘Parent’s Guide to Primary Maths’ ebook led to cooperation with a major financial institution. The ebook has now been distributed directly to their clients and made available to download from their website.

Regular articles and video resources are shared worldwide across social media channels, with 5,000 visitors to the company blog in one month and a rapidly growing permission-based email list of engaged parents.

Our marketing and PR strategy has allowed us to help over 2,000 children worldwide master maths – and this is just the beginning.

All entries which meet the competition criteria are published and our judging panel select a shortlist of three for each category. Winners are announced at an awards ceremony in summer 2016.
