Market trader's kind gesture to struggling families

A market trader has offered to help customers who are struggling following the cut to Universal Credit.

Joe's Stall in Huyton sent out a message on social media in which he offered a discount to customers.

The tweet read: "If any of our customers are struggling this Christmas with the cut to Universal Credit, send me a message and we can give you 15% discount on any stock, you can pay off weekly and collect when your ready.

"It's not much but it might help some family's out, Joe."

Joe's Stall, run by Joseph Murphy, is well-known in the town for selling toys, gadgets, football merchandise and seasonal goods in Huyton Village.

The Murphy family have been trading in the Huyton area over the last 100 years, and he grew up working on his auntie's fruit and veg stall.

Over 500,000 households will be affected by £20-a-week cut to Universal Credit.

The £20 uplift, implemented earlier in the pandemic to ensure families had enough to live off, has been viewed as vital to ensuring thousands did not fall into poverty.

However, the boost to Universal Credit payments ended on October 6.

In Merseyside, the drop will hit tens of thousands of families.

DWP figures suggest at least 90,354 young people in the area are in households who rely on the benefit.

And more than 200,000 working people in receipt of the benefit in those areas will see their income slashed by more than £1,000 a year.
