Market Street flooded as heavy downpours batter region

Part of Manchester city centre was left flooded this afternoon as a heavy downpour battered the region.

Video footage showed a large build-up of water on a section of Market Street - next to the Metrolink stop.

Despite the flooding, trams appeared to be continuing to operate along the line.

In a display of true Mancunian grit, people can also be seen striding through the flood water outside the old Debenhams store.

Jason Hartley was stood at the tram stop at the time, and said the water reached as high as 'four inches' at one stage.

"It was quite high," he said. "There were businesses where the water was up to the front of the premises.

"They evacuated the Caffè Nero.

"The drains were stuffed with moss and litter so that may be the reason the water could not drain off.

"The trams carried on going through the water, but they were going slow."

Heavy rain has battered the region this afternoon, with flash flooding reported on a number of major roads, including the M60.

The anticlockwise slip road at junction 17 was closed at about 3.15pm due to the amount of water on the carriageway.

It is unlikely that the miserable weather will end any time soon, with rain forecast through the evening and over the next few days.
