Markeith Loyd 'refused to attend' hearing on new assault charges

ORLANDO, Fla. _ Markeith Loyd, the man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and an Orlando police officer, "refused to attend" a court appearance Friday morning on new assault charges, officials said.

Loyd was scheduled to go before a judge on three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm stemming from an incident in August, records show.

Details about the charges haven't been released.

When Judge Adam McGinnis called Loyd's name in court Friday morning, a corrections officer said, "He refused to attend."

The hearing was rescheduled for Saturday.

Court records show the charges are related to an incident that happened Aug. 21, 2016 _ nearly four months before Loyd was accused of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon.

He eluded police for nearly a month after Dixon's death and on Jan. 9 was confronted by Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton outside a Wal-Mart store. Police said Loyd opened fire on Clayton, killing her.

He then fled, sparking a massive nine-day manhunt that eventually ended with his arrest at an abandoned house in the Carver Shores neighborhood in west Orlando.

Friday's hearing would have been the third day in a row that Loyd, 41, appeared before a judge.

He had a short hearing Wednesday after police added a charge of resisting arrest without violence. Loyd didn't say much during that hearing, but was combative.

He also cursed at the judge as Orange County corrections officers led him out of the courtroom.

Loyd has said he plans to represent himself in court, and on Thursday went before Ninth Circuit Chief Judge Frederick Lauten, who determined Loyd was competent enough to waive his right to a lawyer.

A final decision on if Loyd can actually represent himself will be made at a later time.

Loyd is facing a total of 14 charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and carjacking with a firearm.
