Mark Wood ruled out for Ashes and rest of season with side strain suffered during World Cup final

Mark Wood will take no part in the Ashes series due to the side strain he suffered in the World Cup final.

The England fast bowler was in line to play a part against the Aussies after starring with the ball as the tournament hosts won the World Cup.

But he has now been ruled out for the rest of the campaign delivering another blow to England - who saw Jimmy Anderson limp out after bowling just four overs on the first day of the first Test at Edgbaston.

Wood felt pain in his side during the final but continued to bowl at high pace - and was ultimately rewarded with a World Cup winners' medal.

But missing out on the Ashes will hurt for the Durham quick who has been plagued with injury niggles over the course of his career.

Wood will also undergo surgery on his right knee in order to clear up some excess cartilage - but it is the side strain that will rule him out for the rest of the campaign.

The 29-year-old took 18 wickets during the World Cup, bettered only by Jofra Archer among England's string of bowlers.

He took 5-41 against the West Indies in St Lucia in the only Test he has played in the last 12 months.
