Mark Warburton set to be named QPR manager

Mark Warburton is set to be named QPR manager this week.

The 56-year-old former Brentford boss has been identified as the man to succeed Steve McClaren after Rangers failed to land their primary target Tim Sherwood.

Rangers have cast the net wide since sacking McClaren on April 1 and they hope Warburton can transform the club after a difficult season in the Championship.

QPR interviewed Carlos Carvalhal, Nigel Pearson and Darren Moore, while former Rangers players Gareth Ainsworth and Marc Bircham were also considered.

But Warburton, who has been out of work since he left Nottingham Forest in December 2017, has appealed to QPR because of the job he did at west London rivals Brentford and his record of working with young players within a restricted budget.

Warburton brought through a group of young players including England defender James Tarkowski at Brentford and got the Bees to the Championship play-offs in 2014-15.

Rangers paid a fine of almost £42million in July for failing to comply with Financial Fair Play rules and they will need to reduce their budgets significantly next season.

Warburton left Brentford in 2015 and then spent two years at Rangers in Scotland before a nine-month spell at Nottingham Forest in 2017. He impressed Rangers director of football Les Ferdinand and chief executive Lee Hoos during their interview process.

QPR finished 19th in the Championship after ending their season with a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.
