Mark Travers ruled out of Ireland's qualifier double header with freak injury

A freak injury has ruled Mark Travers out of Republic of Ireland's Euro 2020 qualifier double header against Denmark and Gibraltar.

The young goalkeeper has left Ireland's training camp in Portugal after sustaining a hand injury.

Travers, 20, will return to Bournemouth to assess the injury and Mick McCarthy will have to juggle his goalkeeping options.

McCarthy said: "It is an injury that Alan Kelly [goalkeeping coach] and the Doc [Alan Byrne] has never seen...he's got a displaced fracture of his thumb.

"It's really sad for us because he's a great lad to have around the place and a good goalkeeper, but he's got to go back and get it repaired if he wants to be ready for the start of the [Premier League] season."

Travers was having a whirlwind couple of weeks after breaking into Bournemouth's starting lineup for the final games of the Premier League season and earning a second Ireland call-up.

But he will to wait to win his first cap as Ireland look to maintain their 100% record in their group.
