Mark Schwarzer makes outlandish Liverpool transfer claim about Robbie Fowler

Former Middlesbrough goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has taken credit for Robbie Fowler returning to Liverpool in 2006.

Schwarzer saved a last-minute Fowler penalty for Middlesbrough against Manchester City on the final day of the 2004-05 season which secured his side a place in Europe at the expense of their opponents.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez went on to a move for the striker the following January after he had previously departed for Leeds United in 2001.

Schwarzer, who also had spells with Chelsea and Leicester City, believes Fowler should thank him for the move.

"He actually owes me because I saved his penalty which meant Manchester City didn't qualify for Europe which meant in turn he was to leave Manchester City and re-sign for Liverpool," the Australian said.

"Had they qualified for Europe, the likelihood is he would have stayed at Manchester City and never re-signed for Liverpool so he has to thank me for that!"
