Mark Schwarzer joins David de Gea pile-on with scathing assessment of fellow keeper

Former Premier League goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has criticised Manchester United's David de Gea following the Spaniard's latest high-profile mistake.

De Gea was beaten far too easily by Tottenham's Stephen Bergwijn as the Dutchman opened the scoring in United's 1-1 draw on Friday, and it comes after many have questioned whether on-loan Sheffield United 'keeper Dean Henderson could be a better choice for the No.1 jersey at Old Trafford next season.

Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane was furious with De Gea following the error, saying he is "the most overrated goalkeeper I've seen in a long, long time."

And speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Schwarzer also appeared far from impressed with De Gea's recent form.

"Over the past 18 months David de Gea has made a considerable amount of mistakes and that's not expected from a keeper at that level,' said Schwarzer.

"For a top, world-class keeper, the maximum number of mistakes leading to a goal shouldn't be more than two a season and he's clearly made more than that."

Schwarzer also believes Henderson has a strong chance of becoming United's first choice 'keeper next season, and thinks De Gea's place in the starting line-up could be in danger.

"It will come to a head, when you've got Dean Henderson playing so well at Sheffield United and he's made it clear he won't sit on the bench," Schwarzer added.

"Is Henderson good enough to take the number one shirt at United? He has the potential."

De Gea will no doubt be desperate to put things right when United take on Sheffield United on Wednesday in what could be a huge game in deciding the European qualification spots, with the Blades just two points behind the Red Devils having played a game less.
