Mark Scanlon announced as new League of Ireland director as FAI confirm appointments

Mark Scanlon has been confirmed as the new League of Ireland Director.

The Meathman landed the role after an interview process where internal FAI candidates only were allowed to apply.

Scanlon had been the FAI National Coordinator for Schools and Third Level Football.

He was also Ireland’s opposition analyst at the Under-19 European Championships in Armenia last year.

He succeeds Fran Gavin in the job although the latter’s role had changed to FAI Competitions Director.

Former Ireland striker Niall Quinn was at one stage hotly tipped for the League of Ireland director’s post but did not end up applying.

Scanlon’s elevation was one of four key appointments ratified by the interim board of the FAI.

Rea Walshe has been reappointed to the role of Chief Operations Officer having had to interview for her own job.

Mark Russell moves from Commercial Director to the new position of Commercial and Marketing Director.

Gary Owens, the interim FAI chief executive, said: “I want to congratulate Rea Walshe, Mark Russell, Mark Scanlon and Ger McDermott on their appointments.
